A charcoal drawing produces a stunning picture in black and white. Its most early use was to create cave paintings dating to more than 30,000 BC [T. Patel: "Stone Age Picassos"; New Scientist, 1996, 151, (no. 2038), 33-35.]. Famous cave art at Lascaux, Roufignac, France, shows the drawing of a mammoth dating about 15,000 BC to 9000 BC. Charcoal was widely used during the Renaissance for creating initial drawings. Charcoal marks are made as tiny carbon particles are deposited into the depressions of the fibrous paper, thus they have a tendency of "dusting off". With the advent of advanced methods by the end of the 15th century, drawings were "fixed" by being immersed in baths of gum. Thereafter, these drawings instead of being preparatory sketches became finished works of art, occupying a place of their own. Noted German artist Albrecht Dürer made "fixed" charcoal drawings famous. From Rembrandt to Degas, Matisse and Picasso, all have made extensiv e use of charcoal.
